Building a Solid Future: Job Stability in the Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing industry can be an excellent place to build a solid and stable career. Even in times of economic uncertainty, products still have to be made. But there are proactive steps you can take to make your way up the career ladder and create job stability.

Creating Job Stability in Manufacturing

Focus on Your Tech Skills

The manufacturing industry is undergoing rapid evolution, and it’s not likely to slow down anytime soon. Manufacturing facilities are now more high-tech than ever before, utilizing artificial intelligence, autonomous robots, and more. Future-proof your skills now by learning to work with technology, and be sure to revisit your skills every few years. There’s always another certification to earn or on-the-job training to take advantage of.

Don’t Forget About Soft Skills

Tech skills are becoming increasingly important in manufacturing, but they’re just one part of the equation. Soft skills, or those traits and behaviors that make work run more smoothly, also play a key role in any manufacturing facility. Key skills to focus on include:

  • Time management
  • Problem solving
  • Attention to detail
  • Organization
  • Leadership

Ask for What You Want

Many manufacturing facilities have a relatively straightforward path to advancement. You might become a floor lead, then a shift supervisor, and then perhaps a department head. But your supervisor can’t read your mind. If you’re interested in a management track, be sure to let them know. You might also want to request job shadowing or mentorship so that you can better learn all aspects of the work.

Don’t Be Afraid to Leave…Or to Stay

Manufacturing is done all over the world, and there is a chronic labor shortage in this industry, so you likely won’t have any trouble finding another job. If you feel like you can’t get ahead at your current employer, don’t be afraid to make a move. On the other hand, it’s a field in which loyalty is often rewarded, so if you have job stability and like your company, don’t feel obligated to move around.
