Ways to Celebrate Employee Appreciation Day

Employee Appreciation Day is March 1. It’s the perfect time to build engagement and give your overall work culture a boost. But how can you celebrate it in a way that feels meaningful rather than forced? Here are a few ideas.

Make It an Adventure

No matter how much your team members love their work, who hasn’t dreamed of escaping the office in the middle of the day? If you can afford to shut down for the day, take your team members out for a thrilling experience. Adventure parks, rock climbing, or even helicopter tours are just a few possibilities. Of course, if anyone on your team has health concerns, make sure you choose an activity that they can participate in as well. Bonus: an adventure day also serves as an incredible team-building exercise.

Host a Person-to-Person Scavenger Hunt

Ahead of Employee Appreciation Day, send out a survey with a series of personal but not too personal questions.‍ Things to ask might include:

  • Are you left-handed or right-handed?
  • When is your birthday (month and day only)?
  • What’s your favorite color?
  • What is your preferred movie genre?
  • Do you know how to drive a stick shift?

There should be about 10-15 questions total, depending on how much time you’ll have for the scavenger hunt. Compile a list of everyone’s answers.

On the day of the scavenger hunt, provide everyone with a list of all the questions, and direct them to take pictures of all the left-handers, or everyone who was born on a specific month and day, or all the people who can drive a stick shift. The winner is the person who correctly identifies the most people.

Be Kids Again

Encourage your employees to be kids for the day with a collection of fun foods. Pizza, burgers, cookies, donuts…and don’t forget about the ice cream sundaes! Just be sure to offer options for those with dietary restrictions. After lunch, screen a fun family movie or play some childhood favorite board games. Embracing the power of relaxation and fun on Employee Appreciation Day isn’t just about a day off—it’s an investment in your team’s morale, well-being, and, ultimately, your company’s retention rates.
