The Importance of a Work Life Balance

Maintaining a healthy work-life is important to your overall well-being and even your physical health. People need boundaries between their personal and professional lives. When one gets in the way of the other, we start to get overwhelmed, and we can’t fully commit to either one. Here are five reasons why it’s important to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Ensure mental stability

To say that mental health is important is an understatement. It affects everything else about your life, from your work productivity to your physical health to your overall happiness. When you prioritize your job above all else, you’re letting the rest take a back seat, including your relationships with friends and families. Too much stress and pressure and not enough rest and relaxation can lead to mental health disorders, including depression, delusions, and even eating disorders and other addictions.

Protect your physical health

Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet are important factors that determine your physical health, none of which can be achieved if you’re overdoing it at work. Not to mention that stress can hurt your immune system, making you more susceptible to the flu, common cold, and other viruses. Plus, it’s associated with high blood pressure and heart disease.

Be more productive

People are much more productive when they step away from what they’re doing for a little bit and take a break. But if you’re powering through and staying at work for long hours, you’re likely to burn out and hit a wall. You need opportunities to relax and recharge, so you can return to work reenergize and ready to hit the ground running.

Life is short

Yes, your career is essential, and if you’re passionate about your job and the work you do, that’s great. You’ll probably achieve great success someday. But the fact of the matter is that we only get one life, and if you’re committing the majority of your time to your job, think of all the things you’re missing out on. Nurturing relationships with your loved ones, beautiful sunsets, birthday parties, and being there for a friend. There are many life events that you’ll never get back, and no amount of career advancement can make up for them.

Find healthy outlets

There are a lot of hobbies and life experiences that you’ll never enjoy if you’re at work all the time. Rock climbing and hiking. Traveling and seeing the sights. Sailing. Trying new restaurants. Taking a new workout class. Reading a novel. It’s good to have hobbies and pursuits outside of work that challenge you in different ways and encourages you to set goals and think differently. When you hit a major stressor at work, for example, wouldn’t it great to forget about it for a few hours while you get outside and train for a marathon?
