What to Look For When Hiring a Production Worker

A production worker is responsible for assembling products, checking parts, ensuring that all machinery is running smoothly, and helping with packaging and shipment of items. Much of your company’s productivity and efficiency is dependent on this person, so you have to be selective when hiring. Aside from good verbal communication and a sense of teamwork, there are some hard skills to assess when your interview your job candidates. Here’s what to look for when hiring a production worker.

Blueprint reading

A good production manager can read blueprints and work according to instructions given to them. They need to pay attention to details as they’ll be reading and interpreting documents like safety rules and factory regulations, measuring and pouring ingredients, and reading and interpreting gauges.

Software experience

Your ideal production worker candidate should have experience working with a variety of different software and other relevant tasks. Usually, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is used to track inventory and production operations. Look for candidates who have experience with that software or similar software or can otherwise demonstrate a certain level of computer literacy—think: MS Word and Excel—and technical expertise.

Experience with safety training

As an employer, you want to hire workers who prioritize safety. There’s too much at stake; otherwise—a safety regulation might mean serious fines, not to mention that an injury or serious accident will damage your reputation, make you vulnerable to lawsuits, not to mention devastate your employee morale. Identify candidates who are willing to follow the rules, have been trained in safety regulations in the past and can be proactive and fix problems.

Knowledge sharing

As you build and develop your skills, you need to be able to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of your company. It’s always a perk if you have the ability to train recruits and be open to new procedures and protocols as technological advances in your industry emerge.

Valuable soft skills

Production workers fulfill such a wide range of responsibilities, from sorting and packaging to running operations to assembling products. Such tasks mean that soft skills are just as essential as the hard skills mentioned above. A good production worker is willing to learn new tasks, is able to communicate both verbally and in writing with supervisors and coworkers, and can work well as part of a team. They should be able to manage their time, work well with their hands, be self-motivated, able to handle stress, have Integrity, and be able to plan and organize procedures.
