Turning Temp Job into Perm Position

Turning Your Temp Job Into A Permanent Position

You just came across the opportunity of a lifetime. The problem is, you don’t have the right credentials. You have no way in – and you’re not even sure that it is even something you are truly capable of doing.

The position is for an immediate hire, which means that the company is in dire need of someone to fill that position very quickly. You continue your job search. You find interim roles that seem to align with the original job posting, although the company’s name has been masked. You decide to take a shot – “What’s the worst that can happen?” right?!

A Few Statistics.

According to the American Staffing Association:

  • More than three million temporary and contract employees work for America’s staffing companies during an average week.
  • During a year, America’s staffing companies hire nearly 17 million temporary and contract employees, 37% of which come from industrial roles, including Manufacturing, Engineering, and Skilled Trades.
  • Most (76%) work full time, comparable to the overall workforce (82%).
  • Half (49%) of staffing employees say it’s a way to get a permanent job.
  • Nine out ten said staffing work made them more employable.
  • One-third (35%) were offered a permanent job by a client where they worked on an assignment, and two-thirds (66%) of those accepted the offers of permanent employment.

Some people start in the mailroom, and others start as a temp. Both are honorable ways to get your foot in the door and start earning your way to the top. If you ever find yourself in a temp role that you love, here are a few ways that you can turn that temp job into a permanent position!

Build relationships, make contacts.

While in your temp position, make sure to network your butt off. Build relationships all with those that you meet. Everybody knows somebody that knows somebody that will now know you. Make contact with the higher-ups, including low-level management, supervisors, and executives. Remember; eventually everyone is promoted. Others will leave for better positions at competitor companies. Find your in while you can. Build those relationships. Also, find a good mentor while you’re at it!

Go above-and-beyond, be hired from within.

There are so many advantages to test-driving that new position – even before you’re offered the job. Because you are a temp, you have been given the “go-ahead” to audition for the role that you would like to be hired for. Go above-and-beyond without hesitation. Take the initiative. Show them that you take your role seriously and would love the opportunity to work for this company in the future. Perform at the top of your game. Be an asset to that company, be assertive, be memorable, and stand out. The more indispensable you are, the more likely you will be unforgettable, especially when they are looking for qualified candidates. Turn that temp role into a permanent hire, be hired from within.

Learn which skills you need for a more long-term role.

Although you won’t be there for long, make sure to gather as much insider information as possible during your time with the company. Learn which training and/or certification you will need to secure the role you’re after. Find out what you do not include on your resume that will help you get through applicant tracking systems (ATS) and into the hands of the hiring manager. Network with the hiring manager directly and earn his or her good favor. Act quickly to secure all courses and professional development so that you may go directly into this role upon leaving as a temp.

Learn the company inside and out, become a brand advocate.

While you’re working at the company, be its biggest cheerleader. Learn everything you can about its history, its mission, and where it would like to go in the next few years. Adopt their processes, their products, and what makes them stand out in the markets. Learn who the key executives and stakeholders are – perhaps learn their stories and how they ended up at the company, themselves. Be an advocate for the company’s needs. Show that you are worthy of wearing their badge. Take pride in all you do.
